Dà Lam (Già Lam)

Dà Lam (Già Lam)

Sanskrit: Sangharama, meaning 'community garden' (sangha, community + arama, garden) and thus 'monastery', which is said to have been where Buddha taught his disciples.

Additionally, according to Chinese Buddhism, Quan Thánh Đế Quân (Guan Yu) is revered as Phật Dà Lam (Sangharama Bodhisattva), a heavenly protector of the Buddhist dharma.

Over time and as an act of syncretism, Guan Yu was seen as the representative guardian of the temple and the garden in which it stands. His statue traditionally is situated in the far left of the main altar.

Kinh Ðệ Thất cửu:
Dà lam dẫn nẻo tây qui,
Kim chung mở lối kịp kỳ kỵ sen.

Funeral Prayer for the Seventh Nine-Day Period:
The Sangharama Boddhisattva will show you how to meet heavenly dwellers.
The golden bell sounds will tell you when to leave by lotus flower.
